1. The modification to the rudder pedal foot rest stirrups has been completed. We have machined new locating lugs from Alloy bar stock to regain the required side clearance where the steel doubler plates have increased the width of the pedal. The components that make up the rudder pedals were reassembled, new bearings installed in the lay shafts and replacement retaining nuts machined. Still required are replacement rubber pads for the foot rests and retaining springs for the stirrups. These most likely will have to be made.
2. The rudder trim wheel assy has been overhauled, with the unit being disassembled, gears cleaned and inspected, case stripped and repainted. Indicator ring straightened, painted and lettering infilled white. The switch mount bracket that goes with the rudder trim wheel has been fabricated from an original sample.
3. The engine cut-out Teleflex housings for the navigators back armour have been overhauled with replacement springs and retainers for the detent bulb installed..
4. A replacement set of micarta packers have been cut out for the cannon barrel support beams under the cockpit floor all from original patterns.
5. Work has begun on overhauling the 20mm cannon ammunition box and cannon mounting beam structure. The wooden ammunition boxes have been removed from the beams and carefully washed to preserve the original varnish. Some minor glue repairs will be required but otherwise they can be refitted as original. The lids have had their locating pins and latching assemblies removed for cadmium plating. The support beams have been paint stripped and two of the beams have been repainted. The third beam requires repair and a replacement saddle half is being welded to the original support. The control cable pulley bracket assembly has been overhauled. This mounts to the rear beam.
6. Work has started on the cockpit heating cold air and heating duct components .The hot air box has been stripped and is in the process being repaired as required. The two hot air box levers have also been overhauled.
7. Both elevators have been re-assembled and are almost ready for skinning. We have fabricated new leading edge outboard skins for both sides and repaired the ribs as required. All the trim tab operating system bearings are being replaced. We have salvaged the original trailing edge tube.
Woodwork
The guys have spent the month preparing the inside surface of the fuselage for the installation of the attachment ferrules. The location of the attachments has been taken from the drawing and transferred to the surface of the fuselage. In some cases the actual components have been used to assist in confirming the location of the ferrules and in the pictures you can see these items fitted in position.
In addition to the ferrule install work the rear bulkhead that supports the fin and horizontal has been completed. The wing root fairing ribs have been completed and one photo you can see where these mount on the outside of the fuselage immediately forward of the wing cut out. The tank you can see in one photo is the long range oil tank. A new pneumatic equipment mount plate has also been made.
Work has also been done on the fin assembly and the rear spar section has been fabricated. The assembly jig has been completed and a test fin is being assembled in the fixture.
Because of the delay with delivery of the attach ferrules time has been available to produce replacement bulkeads. These will go into Glyns fuselage and are to replace those used from his project.
